JOSEPHINE COUNTY, Ore -- An Ashland man was killed in a head-on crash along Highway 199 near Wonder on Tuesday evening, according to Oregon State Police.
Rural Metro Fire said that an off-duty firefighter from Medford Fire Department was returning from the Slater Fire when he came upon the scene, spotting two crashed vehicles about 100 yards apart from one another.
Emergency crews from multiple agencies arrived on the scene and worked to extract a survivor from brush along the roadway.
Oregon State Police responded to the crash near milepost 13 just after 7 p.m. Preliminary investigation found that 38-year-old Timothy Ibarra of Ashland was traveling southbound before crossing into the northbound lane — colliding with 42-year-old Jeffrey Roberts of Wilderville.
Ibarra was pronounced dead at the scene. Roberts, the man crews extracted from the wreck. was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.
Oregon State Police was assisted by Rural Metro Fire, Oregon Department of Transportation, and Josephine County Sheriff's Office.
Redwood Highway was closed for almost two hours as rescue and law enforcement personnel worked on the scene and investigation.
