CAVE JUNCTION, Ore. — All evacuation levels have been lifted in the Illinois Valley as fire crews continue to make progress on containing the large fire, the Josephine County Sheriff's Office announced on Thursday.
"All evacuation levels 3, 2 and 1 are being lifted for residents located in the Illinois Valley," the agency said. "Federally managed lands may still have closures due to fire and/or firefighting operations."
As of Thursday morning, the Slater Fire covered 154,445 acres, with the smaller Devil Fire to the east covering 8,506. The former was 48 percent contained, with the latter at 20 percent.
Fire officials said that crews are still working to connect more than 240 miles of fire line around the Slater Fire's perimeter, and mop-up continues both around Happy Camp and toward the Illinois Valley.
"Although the formal evacuation levels are being lifted for these areas, we would like to remind all residents of Josephine County that they should always be in the 'Preparedness' mindset," the Sheriff's Office said. "Fires, floods or winter weather could cause us to evacuate our homes, sometimes at a moment’s notice."
