MEDFORD, Ore. — One man is now in custody after a high-speed crash early Tuesday afternoon that closed down the Garfield overpass in Medford, according to the Medford Police Department (MPD).

Witnesses saw a man driving 'over 100 miles per-hour' on Interstate 5 before the driver left the freeway at the Garfield overpass and crashed into another vehicle.

When an Oregon State Police (OSP) trooper arrived at the scene, MPD says that the man fled on foot. He was reportedly last seen at the Rogue Valley Transportation District transfer station around 2 p.m., where he apparently changed clothing.

MPD described the man as 'Italian looking,' with a tattoo on the left side of his face.

About a half hour after MPD posted photos of the man on Facebook—in both his before and after outfits—a follower of the MPD Facebook page apparently spotted the suspect on a bike path, reporting his location to police. Now, MPD says, they have the man in custody.

According to Sergeant Proulx with OSP, there was also a woman in the car at the time of the crash, and she likewise attempted to flee on foot. She, however, was caught. Sgt. Proulx said that the woman was brought to the hospital and has been interviewed regarding the incident.

MPD has not yet released the identity of the male suspect beyond those photos.
