MEDFORD, Ore. — In a crosswalk, pedestrians have the right of way. The Medford Police Department (MPD) will be driving that point home in a short but intensive operation on April 30 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., at the intersection of E 4th and N Bartlett streets.

MPD is calling this a 'targeted pedestrian safety enforcement operation.' For those hours on April 30, they will be watching the intersection to ensure that drivers are yielding the right of way to pedestrians in the crosswalk—and citing the drivers that don't.

Violations can cost a driver $265.

There is a crosswalk at every intersection, according to MPD, even if it is unmarked. On April 30, MPD will be paying special attention to the following laws:

 - Drivers must stop and remain stopped for a pedestrian in a marked or unmarked crosswalk if the pedestrian is walking in the driver's lane of traffic or the lane adjacent.
 - It is illegal to pass a stopped vehicle at a marked or unmarked crosswalk if the vehicle is stopped to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway.
