ASHLAND, Ore. — Hundreds of Ashland students walked out of class Friday to make their voices heard. The student-led walkout is part of a national movement to remember the victims of the Columbine shooting 19 years ago.

The call-to-action packed the Ashland Plaza and filled it with speeches, songs and chants.

Student Organizer Emily Belcastro said the group doesn't plan to stop.

"I think a lot of people expect this to go away and expect us to lose interest but this is not a trend this is us saying enough is enough," Belcastro said.

Aanisah Clark, Student Organizer, said the group used the April 20 date to push for change.

"Policy change and gun control is what we are pushing for," Clark said.

Groups of Walker Elementary School students and students from Willow Wind also participated.

Willow Wind parent Colleen Gibbs said she supports her daughter's choice to walk out of school to be a part of the movement.

"They're feeling some empowerment and that's what we need in our country right now is for the kids to start paying attention and feeling empowered like they can do something because they can," Gibbs said.

The Ashland School District says it had about 600 reported absences Friday. Any student who did not have a parent call and excuse them will take an unexcused absence for the day.
