LAKEVIEW, Ore.--Despite being trounced by Cascade Christian a week ago, St. Mary's still had a clear path to a second postseason appearance in 22 years heading into Friday night. Its task: Travel to Lakeview and beat a Honkers team it had demolished by 48 a year ago.
The Crusaders weren't able to summon last year's magic, however, and dropped their final regular season contest 27-26.
Because only the top two teams of the Southern Cascade League are awarded automatic playoff spots in class 3, the Honkers have secured a trip to the postseason, while the Crusaders have likely been eliminated.
15 teams automatically qualify for the 3A state tournament and the highest ranked at-large team rounds out the field of 16. It's unlikely that St. Mary's winds up as that final team when the OSAA rankings freeze at 10 p.m. on Saturday.
