HILT, Calif. -- There's not much left that would tell you there were once hundreds of residents in the town of Hilt, just south of the Oregon border.

What's left is an old church built in 1923, the school built after the war, and what used to be houses, now grazing horses.

But from the World War I era until the early 1970s, it was the home to hundreds of people.

Fruit growers built Hilt to tap into vast timber reserves, to make boxes for the California fruit industry.

However, by the early 1970s, companies decided to shut it all down, which hit people hard.

The hundreds who lived in Hilt said that it was a great place to raise a family and earn a living.
