MEDFORD, Ore. – Air travel and transport and the Rogue Valley have almost grown up together.

Five years after the Wright brothers’ first flight, aeronaughts began showing up at county fairs stirring up interest in flying.

But until the post office began contracting for air mail pilots, most of the Rogue Valley’s pilots were barnstormers and thrill seekers.

That changed in the mid-1920s with the formation of Pacific Air Transport and an airfield at the fairgrounds south of Medford.

That led to the construction of the Medford municipal airport north of town in 1930, as well as the creation of United Airlines.

In the 70 years since the Medford airport grew from a fairgrounds landing field, there have been a lot of changes.
