MEDFORD, Ore. -- In the years before World War I, Medford was booming. Orchards were sprouting up everywhere and the wealthy easterners planting roots here loved to get together.

There were two Carpenter families then, one from Chicago and one from New York. But they didn't always get along.

George Carpenter and his wife liked to party, but by the early 20s, they found themselves on the sideline more and more often.

Trying to salve their social wounds, they laid out a lavish dinner and invited the who’s who of Medford. But no one showed up and that was the final straw.

The next day, the couple packed up their bags and never came back.

The house sat empty for over 40 years and since then, a lot of history has passed under the view of the house on Carpenter Hill.
