GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- On Monday night, the Grants Pass Active Club announced that the 2021 Boatnik Festival is back on. This change in decision comes a little over a week after organizers said that the event was to be canceled this year.
Jim Thompson with the Active Club said that before 4 p.m. on Monday, the festival was not going to happen. But, after pushing through COVID-19 regulations and restrictions from Salem, organizers were able to get all the proper insurance and requirements set to bring it back for 2021.
“Normally of course, we're planning this six months in advance, not two weeks,” Thompson said. “We're running great.”
This year’s event will be a scaled-down version of what people have seen in the past. There will now be one fireworks show instead of two. Craft vendors will not be participating, but there will still be food vendors.
The Active Club plans on spacing out the carnival rides and the food vendors to adhere to outdoor guidelines issued by the state. There will no longer be boat races on Saturday or Sunday, but the main boat race will still happen on Memorial Day. Organizers still plan on having the Memorial Day observation with a flyover along with a parade.
“Every day we've had changes,” Thompson said. “We had no fireworks yesterday. We had no parade two days ago. It'll continue to change daily.”
