EUGENE, Ore. — Incumbent Congressman Peter DeFazio took an early lead in one of Oregon's most closely watched races on Tuesday night.
DeFazio faces challenger Alek Skarlatos, a former member of the Oregon National Guard made famous when he and two other men stopped a gunman from committing a terrorist attack on a train bound from Amsterdam to Paris, an event that saw all three men hailed as heroes. Clint Eastwood directed a film about it that starred Skarlatos.
Skarlatos' bid to unseat DeFazio earned Republican support at the national level. DeFazio has represented Oregon's 4th district since 1987, and was re-elected in 2018 with 56 percent of the vote over Republican challenger Art Robinson.
With almost 70 percent of precincts reporting, DeFazio led Skarlatos more than 54 percent to 44 percent.
