SALEM, Ore. — With preliminary results coming in, one of the candidates for U.S. Senator from Oregon has pulled ahead. The Associated Press called the race for Senator Jeff Merkley over his Republican challenger, Jo Rae Perkins, as soon as results began coming in.
With just over 40 percent of precincts reporting, Merkley had nearly 64 percent of the vote.
Merkley has served as U.S. Senator from Oregon since 2009 and is running for a third term.
Jo Rae Perkins won the Republican primary in May. Though she has been a candidate in several in prior elections, she has not previously held public office.
NewsWatch 12 spoke with both candidates on Thursday to find out more about what each candidate would bring to the office.
