SIMPSONVILLE, SC. -- A South Carolina resident finally came forward to claim a 1.5 billion dollar lottery prize.
The winner, who wants to remain anonymous, is taking home the largest jackpot a single player has ever won. He/she took more than 18 weeks to claim the one-time cash payout of $877.8 million. The state of South Carolina will get $61 million of that in taxes.
CJ Patel, the store owner where lottery ticket was sold, remembers the day four months ago when customers swarmed his store. He says every customer was hoping to match the mega millions numbers and win the one-and-a-half billion dollar jackpot.
"Sometimes I got worried, but I guess whoever won the ticket must be planning for it, taking their time," Patel said.
And as for Patel's store, they'll get some of that money too since they sold the winning ticket.
"After taxes it will be 23 or 25,000, but we'll spend it on renovations for the stores," Patel said.
Since the KC Mart sold the winning ticket, Simpsonville has seen a little more traffic. The KC Mart makes sure people know where the winning ticket was sold.
One KC Mart customer, Cordis Wolfenbarger, said "I'm always going to play. You can't win if you don't play."
