EAGLE POINT, Ore. -- The Welding Program at Eagle Point High School is seeing continued student success. Yesterday five students became Certified in Welding.

What's even more exciting for the program, is that two of those students are girls. Isabella Camarena and Sierrah Marshall are the first two girls at EPHS to become Certified Welders.

Jen Mason, the Assistant Principal of Student Services at EPHS, says the students had to complete a welding certification test and become certified a the state level.

"We're really over the moon that these students have the opportunity to do this and it be such a success for them and a victory for all the work they've been putting in all these years," Mason said.

NewsWatch 12 spoke to Isabella and Sierrah about the certification process and their experience with the welding program.

Isabella Camerena is a Junior at EPHS. Isabella says the experience has become more than just a class.

"I like making things and welding was just part of that and metals, and then it turned out I was a good enough welder to be able to go into the program for it, and now its just more of a hobby than something I need to do," Camerena said.

Sierrah Marshall is a Senior at EPHS. "It's really nice to be able to work where most girls don't, so putting yourself out there and like learning how to use big tools is pretty cool," said Marshall.

The school's Assistant Principal tells NewsWatch 12 that Marshall will be competing at the state level for the Skills USA competition.

The other students that became certified yesterday are Ruben Ragsdale, Jared Cromwell and Gavin Frazier.
