Let’s meet our Pet of the Week for the final week of May. We have a gorgeous girl and bashful boy that are both available right now through Jackson County Animal Services.

First up - meet Athena! She's a very sweet girl who is estimated to be about 9 years old. Athena is on the smaller side and weighs about 45 pounds. She was surrendered to the shelter because she does suffer from a bit of separation anxiety. Her humans are her entire world - and when left alone, she would do just about anything to be with them. With that in mind, she would probably do best in a home with someone who is around most of the time. That makes Athena the perfect companion for those long, lonely days working from home. Her previous owners said she's been around kids and other dogs and she loves them all. Athena is also house trained and absolutely loves car rides. During her stay at the shelter, Athena has been a bit shy. However, all of the wonderful people she's met there have really helped her come out of her shell and become the friendly, beautiful girl you'll see if you go visit her today. Athena has participated in shelter play groups, where she loves hanging around with other dogs - even the younger, more energetic ones. In spite of her age, Athena is full of spunk and is looking for a peaceful, loving home to settle down in for good. Athena’s adoption fee is $95, plus an additional $25 for an annual dog license if you live in Jackson County.

Next up - meet Baby! Baby is a very handsome 3-year-old boy who is certainly looking to be your baby. He can best be described as a Turkish Van mix. Baby is looking for a new home after his owner had to move to an assisted living facility and he couldn’t join them. It’s probably for the best because Baby is a bit on the shy side and can take awhile to warm up. He enjoys gentle pets and would do best in a cat savvy home with people who will give him time and space he needs to settle into his new life. Due to his fearful nature, Baby would probably do best as an indoor cat only, as well. If you're looking for a low maintenance, laid-back guy who just likes hanging around - go ahead and put Baby in your corner! Since he is a Fabulous Featured Feline (or FFF), Baby’s adoption fee has been prepaid by a generous donor.

For those of you who are already pet owners and want to make sure your baby doesn't stray away - Friends of the Animal Shelter (FOTAS) is holding its first ever low-cost Chip-a-thon for cats and dogs! Microchips are a permanent form of identification that can help bring your dog or cat home quickly and safely if they are ever lost. The Chip-a-thon event is Saturday, June 5th, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please call the Jackson County Animal Shelter ahead of time to make an appointment. Appointments are required. The cost will be $20 per pet. For more information, please visit fotas.org or look up Friends of the Animal Shelter on Facebook.

For more information about our Pets of the Week, or to meet Athena and Baby, please call the Jackson County Animal Shelter at 541-774-6654. The shelter is located at 5595 S. Pacific Highway in Phoenix. Their hours are Tuesday - Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday - Sunday from noon to 4:00 p.m.
