YREKA, Calif. — People from Jodi Arias’ home town react to the verdict from her murder trial, which captivated the nation for months.
Arias listed her hometown as Yreka, California. She was living in the town when she met Alexander in 2007 in Las Vegas. The two dated long distance for several months. Then, as the relationship started to sour, Arias left Yreka and moved to Mesa.
She and Alexander continued a sexual relationship until she moved back to Yreka in 2008. During the trial, the prosecution argued that the report of a stolen 25 caliber gun from Arias’ grandparents’ home was one of the murder weapons.
On June 2nd, Arias rented a car in Redding and drove to Mesa. Then on June 4th, she killed Travis Alexander. Shortly after, she returned to Siskiyou County. On her 29th birthday, July 9th, Arias was indicted by a California grand jury. She was arrested and held at the Siskiyou County Jail until her extradition to Arizona in September of 2008.
NewsWatch12 spoke with residents in Yreka, where Arias’ family still lives. Several people told us they didn’t want to speak on camera about the case – some basing their decision out of respect for her family. One man did tell us he will continue to watch to find out what the jury will decided on the sentencing.
“Me, personally, I think she should get the death penalty, that’s me personally,” he said. “I don’t think she’ll get it. I think we are too soft in this country we don’t make people responsible for what they do.”
