Wyden Supports Local Tax

SALEM, Ore. — Senator Ron Wyden is weighing in on the budget issues being seen in counties where timber payments have been cut.

Raising local taxes is one of seven principles he has submitted to a new advisory committee appointed by Governor John Kitzhaber that is overseeing the issue, but one member says that increased taxes will not be a major topic of discussion.

The committee, made up of timber, county, and conservation representatives, including Josephine County Commissioner Simon Hare, are working on a proposal for Congress to raise $100 million a year for timber counties.
