Today is the calm before the storm -- a potent winter storm is headed straight our way beginning late tonight. For today, sunny skies will prevail across all areas, but afternoon highs are going to be pretty similar to our typical morning lows with this very cold arctic air mass in place.
When we do a seasonal forecast we no longer look at weather models (short-range) but rather teleconnections which are better predictors of long-range forecasts. You may have heard of some including El Nino and La Nina which are part of the El Nino Southern Oscillation or ENSO.
The Mission opens its doors once it hits 32 degrees or below, but despite the cold, staff at the Medford Gospel Mission are not seeing many people coming in. The director says there are several homeless people who choose to stay outside.
A cold, wet weather system is sweeping across the Northwest with a promise that snow could fall in the high country by Monday evening, and maybe even near the valley floor by Tuesday morning. For ODOT crews, this is the first likely snow event of the year.
On Monday, the mountain saw fifty mile an hour winds and snow, but it's still way short of what they need to open their trails. Last year the resort opened on December 6th, but this year they likely won't open until the holiday break.
