GRANTS PASS, Ore. — Students at North Middle School in Grants Pass spent the morning remembering a former student who died while serving in Iraq; they now have a memorial wall to honor Manuel Garcia.
“Just a remarkable young man, so much to give loved his country, fought in Iraq and three days before he was to return home he passed away in active duty,” says Rebecca Clark, who knew Manuel Garcia for years.
Manuel Garcia was just 20-years-old when he died while serving in Iraq back in 2007. Garcia was a marine and died just three days before he was set to come home. On Friday, North Middle School honored him by posting pictures and letters from Garcia, saying it’s never too late to honor those who gave it all.
“We wanted to do something to stimulate kids understanding of the important of serving our nation and understanding the importance of Memorial Day,” states Greg Tardieu, the principal of North Middle School. “Memorial Day is not just about barbecues, picnics and parades; it’s about remembering those people who gave their ultimate sacrifice for our country
The school plans to honor alumni who are active or retired service members by placing their pictures along this long wall across from the main office.
