Walk Planned for Public Safety Levy

Grants Pass to rent jail bedsGRANTS PASS, Ore. – Tonight, a group is coming together to voice support for the criminal justice system in Grants Pass.

Supporters are planning to walk through the heart of Grants Pass. They’ll be marching from the Newman United Methodist Church to Henderson’s Chevron Gas Station on A Street. At that point, around 6 p.m., they’ll be holding a rally.

They’re supporting a renewal levy on the November ballot. The levy calls for a tax of 1.79 per thousand of assessed value for four years. The money would help fund Grants Pass Police and Fire.

This comes as Josephine County deals with a lack of funding for its own public safety operations.

    Dear fellow Grants Pass citizens,

I can only hope we understand that in our County, the Criminal Justice System is broken and what is unique in a bad way about Josephine County is the availability of law enforcement. First, Jackson County has multiple cities with police forces, while in Josephine County, we have only one city with a police force and our broken Sheriff’s Office–I might add, this is nothing against our honorable Sheriff, either!

To those who want to rant about our Fire Department and its needs, I have one simple question, have you toured the facilities? I have toured two of them in the city and know that my property tax dollars (paid through my rent) are being well spent. I am pleading with Grants Pass voters to understand two things: This is not an increase in property tax (it renews the current rate) and it is in the best interest of our community to have functioning fire and police services.

If you disagree with me, that is fine but I ask, can we afford our city to turn into the County and have both County wide crisis and city crisis? Again, if you have not checked out the value of our tax money on public safety, take a tour, ask questions, and you will see why it is important that we renew this levy. This levy is NOT associated with the County levy voters defeated–this is about the citizens of Grants Pass looking out for our well-being. PLEASE VOTE in favor of services and law enforcement!
