MEDFORD, Ore. — Two men who were caught on camera burglarizing a Medford business center, were caught on camera again for another crime, but this time the victim videotaped the men after he fought back.
Brandon Shawnego not only video-taped the two men, but he posted it on YouTube. Shawnego says he started recording because he wasn’t sure if police would believe him.
The two men are 23-year-old Cameron Manning and 43-year-old Joseph Miyazaki. Shawnego says one of them asked him for a cigarette. When he told them he didn’t have one, they got violent. They told him they were going to fight him. Shawnego says it was flight or fight.
“You know I had some Father’s Day gifts from my children in my backpack, and I wasn’t going to give it up, and I’m not going to be intimidated. If I could have walked away and just would have, but at the same time, if I had let them get my stuff and walk away they would have done it to someone else,” said Brandon Shawnego.
Manning and Miyazki are known to law enforcement; they were arrested at the end of May. Police say the two were involved a Sparta Building burglary. Miyazki stole over $6,000 worth of electronics and equipment with another person. Manning was found with some of the stolen items.
Police say Shawnego was justified in his response to these two men. They say people can defend themselves, and Shawnego stopped fighting after the two men did.
