MEDFORD, Ore. – A Gold Hill-area man will spend more than 72 years in prison after a jury found him guilty on 26 counts of sex abuse, rape and sodomy earlier this month. It was an emotional morning in the court room as 50 year-old William Henry Thompson received 870 months in prison – more than 72 years.
He also must pay more than $3,000 in restitution and under go testing for HIV. He was also required to sign a document making him a registered sex offender; however, Thompson refused to sign the document, which could lead to additional charges.
At the sentencing, Thompson accused the victims of lying. One of his victims spoke of how Thompson may finally receive the help he needs. Judge Tim Barnack offered some support and advice for the victims in his closing remarks.
“With that same courage I want you to understand that you have a sense of value as a human being. What that sense of value entitles you to, is it entitles you to live a productive life,” the judge stated.
Both Judge Barnack and Deputy District Attorney David Orr applauded the courage of the two victims to come forward and go through the trial. As for Thompson failing to sign the document making him a sex offender, it’s in the state’s hands of whether or not to bring additional charges.
