(CNN) — The National Rifle Association (NRA) has a stern message to gun lovers: Check your weapons at the door. In recent weeks, gun rights advocates, including “Open Carry Texas,” have entered popular restaurant chains with guns in hand. It’s part of an open carry movement.
In a statement, the NRA and the Institute for Legislative Action called it “foolish,” “Downright weird,” and not the message the organization wants to send.
However, the “Open Carry Texas” movement is firing back, saying the NRA has gone “soft.” Groups are threatening to cut up their NRA membership cards unless the organization retracts its comments.
In the statement, the NRA said carrying firearms in public, including restaurants, sets “the stage for further restrictions on our rights.”
