MEDFORD, Ore. — McLoughlin Middle School is rallying support around its newest Sparrow, but this time, their Sparrow comes from the crowd of students.
Brandy Moore is an eighth grader at this school, who may have gone unnoticed in the past, but is now the center of attention. The 14-year-old has lupus; doctors discovered the autoimmune disease last December when Brandy had two blood clots, one of which was in her heart.
“It changed my life dramatically,” Brandy says.
These days, the teenager has two shots per day to thin her blood, and takes two daily lupus medications. Due to the lupus, Brandy has missed the past three months of school, traveling to and from Portland for treatment. Now, however, Brandy is reconnecting with support that even she didn’t see coming.
“This morning she said ‘mom, they’re all going to know the secret’,” said Brandy’s mom.
This secret, on the other hand, doesn’t come with junior high gossip. Instead, this secret comes with a student body, ready to fight. Now, a Sparrow’s secret is being carried by about 800 new friends.
Later this week you can support the Sparrow Clubs Organization by eating at Chipotle in Medford. It’s happening on Thursday from 4 p.m to 8 p.m. The company will give 50 percent of its proceeds during that time to Sparrow Clubs. However, you must mention the organization at checkout.
