LOST CREEK LAKE, Ore. — Veterans gathered their hooks, lines, and sinkers on Saturday for the annual Take a Vet Fishing Day. This is part of National Armed Services Day.
This is the fourth year for the event hosted by the Middle Rogue Steelheaders. Members of the club donate their boats and time to those who serve our country. Dozens of veterans participated, splitting up into several boats and hitting Lost Creek Lake.
Veterans said coming together with others who have risked their lives for the freedom of our country helps them heal and cope with their experiences. Many shared goofy or funny stories of their time in service, but they only talked about the good times not the bad.
“I think it’s lovely,” said veteran De Davis-Guy. “I haven’t been out fishing on this lake before, and I’m having a wonderful time, beautiful day, and we’re catching a few fish.”
While some played catch and release with their fish, others said they are taking their catch-of-the-day home to the frying pan.
