Swine Showmanship At Jackson County Fair

By Danielle Craig

CENTRAL POINT, Ore. — This is the time of year future farmers of America work toward. Several high school FFA members are out at the Jackson County Fair, competing for ribbons.

Wednesday, the fair started out with 4-H and FFA Swine Showmanship. Each student was trying to show off the skills they’ve been working on for months. FFA leaders and members say guiding a pig is more difficult than other animals.

“Other animals, you have a way to hold on to them so you’re in control. The other animals, you still have to work with them, but a pig, you have no control, so you really have to train that hog,” explains Jeremy Kennedy, the Phoenix High School FFA Advisor.

There will be a parade of swine championships starting at 6:10 p.m. The swine and poultry auction begins at 7 p.m.
