This past Wednesday afternoon in Gold Hill a Sherrif’s Deputy was waiting for an impound tow from a driver operating a vehicle on a suspended licensed when he identified a stolen vehicle passing by.
After the tow truck arrived on scene a few minutes later, the deputy began driving the direction in which he saw the stolen vehicle heading.
The deputy started driving up Dardanelles Street when he then saw the stolen vehicle coming down the hill. The officer immediately tried to make a traffic stop when the stolen vehicle took off. The suspect made a turn before pulling into the Gold Hill Estates trailer park.
He then proceeded to jump out of the vehicle, run through the front door of a known family member’s trailer and out the backdoor. The suspect was headed toward the Rogue River on foot and captured a short time later. He was taken into custody after he had jumped into the river and attempted to swim away.
The suspect was identified as Matthew McNeal, age 30, of Grants Pass and was taken to the Jackson County Jail.
McNeal is currently facing charges which include elude-vehicle, elude -foot, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, and disorderly conduct, as well as numerous traffic citations.
The stolen 2005 Chevy Malibu was taken from Grants Pass on February 1, 2013. The vehicle has since been returned to its owner.
