Suspect in Custody After Standoff

GRANTS PASS, Ore. — A woman is in custody and is being treated for minor injuries after police say she ran her car into a fire truck, following a half-hour stand off with law enforcement.

This all started about 4 a.m. When police got a call saying 58-year-old Cathy Kukoski was leaving home after an argument with her mother. She reportedly had a gun with her when she left.

Patrol officers caught up with her and she sped away, then led them on a slow chase. She eventually stopped at NW D and 4th Streets, but refused to get out or listen to police. Police say there was heightened concern because so many citizens were walking in the area, and the incident was just a couple of blocks away from the growers and crafters market.

The SWAT team and the critical incident negotiations team then responded. They threw spike strips on the road to keep her from getting away. Kukoski then ran over the spike strips and as her tires deflated she quickly sped to another intersection where a fire truck had set up a perimeter, and crashed into the truck.

She went to the hospital for minor injuries and has been lodged in the Josephine County Jail.
