Surveyor Works to Rescue Maps

MEDFORD, Ore. — A former Jackson County Surveyor is working to rescue thousands of maps that lay out the early development of Jackson County.

Roger Roberts faces a daunting job. He has fallen heir to more than three thousand maps, some of them hand drawn locators for the earliest land claims, roads, mines and other developments in Jackson County.

Right now, they’re spread out in the former Rogue Valley Genealogical Society building for an open house scheduled for this weekend, but that building has been sold, so the search is also on for a new place to display and research the old maps.

Roberts has a little over a month to find a place to store or display the maps. Some are so large, they will have to be photographed rather than scanned.
