(CNN) — San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge board of directors has unanimously approved a $76 million funding package for the construction of a suicide deterrent net on the bridge.
$50 million will come from the federal government. The rest will come from state and local sources. The plan calls for a 20-foot-wide steel net, extending out from each side of the bridge to deter would-be jumpers.
According to the Bridge Rail Foundation, 46 people died after jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge last year.
