StrikeWatch: Sheriff’s Office Security

jaco sheriffRUCH, Ore. — As the strike continues, Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputies are out securing safety at schools outside the city limits. The areas are also being closely guarded by district security.

Sheriff’s deputies are on patrol outside the entrance of Ruch Elementary School and Griffin Creek Elementary. They say they’ve been out there, off and on, since the strike began.

The entrance is also being closely guarded by security. Those guards say they are working with the district. After more than a week on strike, several teachers at Ruch Elementary are crossing the picket lines back to their classrooms.

The sheriff’s deputy watching the school entrance this morning says he wasn’t called out by the school or the district, he’s just there for general safety.

“We’re going to be out here today, kind of on an as needed basis. If things pick up, we’ll stay longer, and if things stay nice and calm like they are now, I’ll be probably in the area, but not right here,” said Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy Noah Strohmeyer.

Deputy Stohmeyer says the patrols are there to keep everyone safe, even passing traffic.

Glad to see teachers getting back to work. Hope more will join in and end this strike. Or just replace the ones that don’t

I do commend those Ruch teachers getting back to class and providing education for our kids rather than holding them hostage during this ugly fight. We teach our children the value of compromise every day…..Teachers of Medford, ask yourselves, what you are teaching our children now.

Did we forget the school board and school district voted to close Ruch Elementary five years ago due to the operational cost and lower enrollment numbers? Good thing the union got involved and showed flexibility in making it possible for Ruch to operate on a four day week allowing the school to stay open. I hope the Ruch teachers who crossed the line are remembering the six hundred strong who choose to stand up for their students and themselves and not succumb to the path of least resistance.

This has become so ugly. I would like to see striking teachers replaced ASAP. I have lost all respect. The union has threatened substitutes, refused to compromise and made fools of themselves. I do not want them back.

The Ruch teachers mentioned in the article above have been in the classroom from the start. All teachers that chose not to strike (not just Ruch teachers) made a difficult decision to go against the pressure and threats that have been expressed by the MEA…not the path of least resistance, by any means. The District did look at closing Ruch 9 years ago. However, the Ruch community banded together and presented several options that would keep Ruch open. The District, together with the Ruch community, worked out a way to keep the school open. If the MEA had a helping hand in keeping the school open, good for them. It helped to provide a quality education to our rural kids. The Ruch teachers chose to support the community that has supported them throughout the years. The Ruch teachers are risking quite a lot to be there for their kids and the community. Please be mindful that someone who has chosen a different path just has a different viewpoint on a very difficult situation.

I got an email asking me to pull my child out of class by (Medford parents for teachers) I want you to know that it is my choice to send my daughter to school. She is not a pawn in this and you have no right to contact me. My child is enjoying her new class as so many parents have been keeping kids out she only has 19 kids in her class.

Support the good teachers! To bad there are not more of you here for the city kids!

It’s suppose to be about the kids, not the teachers bottom line. These teachers are making w benefits n bonus’s on the average of 100k a yr here in the valley. But they want more benefits and money. It’s an absolute joke that this is about lesson planning time! What a rues! All the while our kids are graduating w out a basic education. They have a diploma but still can’t do eighth grade algebra or spell for the most part. The school system in the USA is broken. Sadly the USA is amongst the dumbest in the world..the most powerful country in the world has some of the dumbest people. What’s wrong w this scenario?
Get rid of tenure and hold teachers accountable for their failing students. In any other profession you get fired for failing at your job, not more money and benefits.
Why are we not protesting the bad teachers for NOT doing their jobs?!?! Parents! Fight for your kids to get an education worthy of 100 k a yr! Demand it! It’s your tax money paying them!
