MEDFORD, Ore. — The teachers are picketing now, but only after months of negotiations. Thursday’s strike comes after one more last-ditch effort to come up with a deal.
On Wednesday morning, both sides met at 9 a.m. The meeting went on for 20 hours into Thursday morning. The school district says it did not have enough time to come up with a deal that would make the MEA happy.
Both sides say the main sticking points are salary, retirement benefits and health insurance. The MEA says it is also asking for changes of working conditions.
The union’s president says they never thought they would get to this day.
