MEDFORD, Ore. — The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is looking to restrict outdoor smoking in state parks, and Monday night you can voice your opinion on the issue.
The new proposal will tighten up on smoking areas and restrictions. It will limit smoking to only personal vehicles, tents, and RVs. In some state parks with campsites, smoking will also be allowed in the overnight camping areas. Some smokers said this proposal will take away their rights.
“I don’t like people telling me what to do,” said smoker Roger Medici. “For some people, they should have enough common sense to not walk up to a group of people or kids and smoke around them.”
If the smoking restriction proposal passes, it would go into effect in March. Park staff would spend the rest of 2014 educating the public on the new regulations, but the new rules would not be enforced until January 2015.
Before that happens, the park and recreation department is wanting to get the public’s opinion on the proposal. People interested can voice your opinion in a public forum on Monday at the Josephine Community Library at 7 p.m. or email the park’s department at firstname.lastname@example.org
