MEDFORD, Ore. — Today is Earth Day, April 22, 2014 and in celebration St. Mary’s School announced it was awarded the Pacific Power Blue Sky Grant worth up to $150,000. The grant will fund purchasing and installing solar panels for an existing solar ready building on campus, according to St. Mary’s. St. Mary’s said the panels will minimize the schools power bill and will become part of St. Mary’s sustainability programs and curricula.
St. Mary’s curriculum already has classes like AP Environmental Science, and AP Physics: Mechanics will be able to draw examples and data from its own in house energy production system. In addition to incorporating content related to solar energy into its classes, the school will also host an art competition for students to design a large sign commemorating Blue Sky and the solar project. St. Mary’s said Blue Sky was integral in completing this long term goal of going green on the school campus.
The solar panel installation will begin in the summer, and plans to be completed in time for the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year.
