SOU Tests Emergency Alert System

12-17 jbo souASHLAND, Ore. – Southern Oregon university is testing out a new emergency notification system. They say it’s partially in response to an increase in campus shootings around the country.

Until now, the school only used cell phone alerts to inform students of public safety risks. This new system broadcasts through speakers both inside and on the rooftops of each building on campus.

“We do have a lot of visitors on campus and they aren’t tied into our notification system,” said co-director of security Steve Ross. “So this provides an opportunity, a safety measure, for those folks also.”

This system will be tested every quarter, alongside their phone alert system. So far this year the phone notifications have only been needed for weather alerts.
