MEDFORD, Ore. — Anyone receiving Social Security benefits will soon be required to get their checks electronically. By March 1st, anyone receiving Social Security benefits must switch over electronically.
The administration is giving people two options. The first option receive your checks through automatic electronic deposits; that means monthly checks will be directly deposited into your bank accounts. The second option for those without a bank account can receive benefits through a direct express debit card.
The administration is hoping the electronic method will make receiving Social Security benefits more efficient and less costly to manage. For one senior citizen at Alderwood Assisted Living, she’s had her benefits deposited electronically since she retired and she says it’s made shopping easier.
Medford Police say this method also reduces fraudulent activity because mail theft is a problem in the area. Again, the Social Security Administration is requiring everyone to switch over to an electronic payment by March 1st.
