Shoppers Make Their Final Purchases

MEDFORD, Ore. — It’s Christmas Eve, and while many are heading out of town or getting ready to celebrate the holidays at home, some people are still out wrapping up their last minute shopping.

Lots of stores including Macy’s, Toys R Us, and Kohl’s are all expanding their holiday hours, some even staying open for 24 hours, leading up to Christmas day.

Retailers hope the expanded hours will make last minute shopping easier for the consumer, and it’s not only crunch-time for shoppers, but for retailers as well.

The holiday shopping season for retailers started off strong in November.  According to ShopperTrak, sales were up 3.4 percent last month, but now in the final days, sales are down 3.1 percent compared to this time last year, but shoppers are still out crossing off the remaining items on their Christmas list.

“I want to have just the right gift for my family,” said last-minute shopper Kathy Owen. “Im going to get my daughter a very special gift, and hopefully find something extra for my husband, and I also hope to sit down and have a cup of coffee and take in the season .”

Stores are also offering discounts as the clock ticks down to Christmas, hoping to boost their sales in the final hours.  Most stores will be closed Christmas day but will re-open on Dec. 26.
