(CNN) — The Taliban in Afghanistan has released U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl after almost five years in captivity, according to a White House statement released on Saturday.
Bergdahl deployed to Afghanistan in May of 2009. He was taken prisoner by the Taliban in June of 2009 in Paktika Province, Afghanistan. His captors have released video of Bergdahl over the years.
The White House statement says President Obama called Bergdahl’s parents with the news of their son’s release. Bergdahl was the only American prisoner the Taliban held captive.
