Senator Bates Elected Majority Leader

SALEM, Ore. – On Friday, State Senator Alan Bates of Southern Oregon was elected Deputy Majority Leader by his colleagues.

As Deputy Majority Leader, Bates will be the third-ranking member of Senate Democratic leadership team, with a significant role in maintaining order, keeping members informed during Senate floor sessions and negotiating with other legislative leaders.

In the absence of the Senate Majority Leader, the deputy performs the duties of caucus leader. Bates held this position previously in the 2011 and 2012 sessions. He was first elected to the State Senate in 2004.
