MEDFORD, Ore. — On September 15th, Medford Police and Medical personnel responded to reports of an assault on Howard Avenue. The victim, Charles Puzak, was conscious and suffering from significant head injuries. The suspect, John Lopes, was arrested without incident at the time. The assault happened outside and had multiple witnesses. The investigation revealed that Lopes became upset with his roommate, Puzak, and punched and kicked him in the head and upper torso repeatedly. There was alcohol involved. Lopes was lodged in the Jackson County Jail for assault charges. A Grand Jury indicted Lopes on those charges on September 17th.
Puzak’s medical condition deteriorated while he was in the hospital, due to the severity of his head injuries, and on October 10th he died. The Jackson County Deputy Medical Examiner, Dr. James Olson, conducted an autopsy on Puzak and revealed his death was the result of blunt head trauma, and the manner of death was ruled as homicide.
Yesterday, November 14th, the case was presented to a Grand Jury again and the Jury indicted Lopes for manslaughter. Lopes has remained in the Jackson County Jail since the incident with a $50,000 bail.
