ASHLAND, Ore. — Tuesday marks the 40th anniversary of a landmark Supreme Court decision that is still a hot topic.
40 years ago, the United States Supreme Court decided by a 7 to 2 vote that a woman has the right to an abortion. Now, 40 years later, the court’s decision is still a hot topic nationwide.
An event put on by an organization at Southern Oregon University is celebrating the anniversary with a cake and information about the history of the decision. One of the event organizers with the SOU Women’s Resource Center says she wants her generation to be more aware and more grateful of current women’s rights. She says over the past few years, law makers seem to be keeping a close eye on all things related to the Roe vs Wade decision.
“Government officials beginning to care about women’s health care, beginning to care about sexual education and access to these rights,” said organizer Jaimie Armstrong.
Event organizers went on to say that access to a physician to perform the procedure is one of the most pressing issues today. Pro-life organizations also are making a statement about the anniversary. Over the weekend, “Right to Life”, a pro-life organization in Grants Pass, held their annual “March For Life” Event. Event organizers say 400 people participated in that march.
