NEAR GLENDALE, Ore. — An investigative report shows what led to the deadly crash of a fire crew member last summer.
19-year-old Jesse Trader was killed last August while fighting the Big Windy Fire. In the report, investigators say he was on his first assignment driving the truck only about a week after getting his commercial license.
They say the truck was also more than 5,000 pounds overweight, and only had rear brakes. Officials say the report was released for accident prevention purposes, not to assign blame.
The Big Windy Complex burned for more than a month, consuming nearly 29,000 acres.
