GOLD BEACH, Ore. — County leaders from across Southern Oregon are looking at new ways to help counties struggling to pay for public safety.
Sheriff’s, commissioners, and district attorneys are meeting in gold beach this weekend. Some of those attending the summit include all three Jackson County Commissioners, Josephine County Commissioner Simon Hare, and Josephine County Sheriff Gil Gilbertson.
The group hopes to find new ways to help counties struggling from the reductions in federal timber payments, and avoid further cuts to law enforcement. Josephine county and curry county have been two of the hardest hit by budget cuts.
“It’s putting a strain on everybody in Southern Oregon, including counties that are a little more fiscally solvent like Jackson County,” said Josephine County Commissioner Simon Hare.
The Curry County Public Safety Summit begins Friday and runs through Saturday.
