Project Looks at Taxing Car Mileage

MEDFORD, Ore. – A pilot project by the Oregon Department of Transportation is looking at different ways to fund new road work, and one option being discussed would replace the gas tax with a tax on mileage.

ODOT will be presenting its idea at Rogue Valley Area Commission of Transportation meeting next week. The concept would use on-board mileage reporting technology. ODOT said many newer vehicles get better gas mileage or use electric or hybrid technology, and a mileage tax could be an option to keep funding new road projects. ODOT is currently using the pilot project to explore how well the concept would work.

The RCACT meeting will be held on Nov. 13 at the ODOT office at 10 Antelope Road in White City. The meeting runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and will allow time for public comments.

It’s none of your business how far I drive or where. This is the dumbest idea I’ve heard in years. This a violation of my rights! Oregon has enough taxes to support TWO states already. ENOUGH!!!!! This is so comical but so serious it could create a general uprising in our area. If I were on this committee, I would fear for my safety.

That’s not fair to poor people who have to commute for their minimum wage jobs. What about the people in Grants Pass that have jobs in Medford? Or people that can’t afford to live in the city so the live out of town and have to drive long distances to get to work? WTH Oregon? What happens to all the extra Lottery money? Even the winners only get half of their winnings, where does the rest go? Will someone please audit the state?
