Power Line Work Canceled at Steens Mt.

HARNEY COUNTY, Ore. — Two conservation groups are trying to get the U.S. Interior Department to cancel plans for power lines and windmills on Steens Mountain.

Steens is a very popular forty-mile long and two mile high mountain with hunters and hikers located between the city of Burns and the Nevada border.

The Oregon Natural Desert Association and the Audubon Society of Portland filed the petition last week. The wind turbines would be on private land on the mountain that rises to ten thousand feet from the Oregon Desert.

The Bureau of Land Management has cancelled authority to start work on the transmission lines.
