GRANTS PASS, Ore. — The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public of a possible new phone scam after they said a conscientious citizen reported receiving a suspicious phone call.
The Sheriff’s Office said the woman received a call from a man who identified himself as working for “Windows” and requested remote access to her computer files, claiming he needed to remove a virus from her computer. The Sheriff’s Office said the woman works as a computer professional and was aware that the caller was attempting to access her personal information. She said he became upset when she refused to allow him to remotely dial in to her computer system.
The woman thought the man was possibly calling from a large call center. The caller ID on her phone showed “Home Security.” Police would like to remind the public to be vigilant when releasing your personal information, particularly when you did not initiate the contact.
