UPDATE (7:15): Grants Pass Police have arrested a transient man in connection to this shooting. Police say, Jon Andrew Meyer, 30, fired an assault rifle from the lower level of the apartment building. He has been charged with manslaughter, assault, and unlawful possession of a machine gun. He is currently being held at the Josephine County Jail.

GRANTS PASS, Ore.- A young child is dead and a woman is in the hospital after police say a man fired an assault rifle in a Grants Pass apartment.

Grants Pass Police officers responded to an apartment in the 1000 block of Northwest C Street shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday. Officers found two victims – a five-year-old girl and a 44-year-old woman – who had been shot. Both victims were rushed to the hospital. The young girl was pronounced dead, and the woman is still in surgery.

According to Lt. Dennis Ward, police believe a man with an assault rifle-style weapon fired shots through the ceiling of the two-story unit, which hit both victims on the second floor. Ward said officers are still investigating whether the gun was fired by accident or on purpose, but said police detained the man they believe fired the shots. Police said that man is being questioned, but has not been placed under arrest.

The names of both the shooter and victims have not been released. Ward said police do not know what relationship the victims and shooter had with one another. They believe the woman lived in the apartment, but said the girl was not from Grants Pass. Ward said several people were inside the apartment at the time of the incident, and said police are in the process of interviewing witnesses.

We will bring you further information as it becomes available.

My heart aches for you and your family during this time. I pray that god is by your side in all of this and that you are able to find comfort in him. Surely this man, that would commit such a heinous crime, will suffer. Do not let him corrupt your grieving process as you honor and remember the life of this young girl.

No matter what he was doing with the rifle he obviously let go of alot of rounds in order to hit two people and one fatalie.
He needs to be arrested for murder.

If nothing else, at least negligent homicide for starters, child endangerment, aggravated assault, negligent discharge of a firearm, illegal possession of a firearm in case he was ordered not to have a weapon in possession…….
Sounds like there was noise in the apartment above him and he shot through the ceiling at the source of the noise…….

i assume his rifle didn’t have a safety, i know single-shot semi-autos have safety’s but idk about machine guns. also, i wonder, did the trigger get stuck on thereby making the machine gun continue firing? is that even possible? oh well i don’t know what happend. at any rate that’s pretty sad to get shot through the floor in your own apartment, sounds about as likely as getting struck by lightning.
