GRANTS PASS, Ore.- A young child is dead and a woman is in the hospital after police say a man fired an assault rifle in a Grants Pass apartment.
Grants Pass Police officers responded to an apartment in the 1000 block of Northwest C Street shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday. Officers found two victims – a five-year-old girl and a 44-year-old woman – who had been shot. Both victims were rushed to the hospital. The young girl was pronounced dead, and the woman is still in surgery.
According to Lt. Dennis Ward, police believe a man with an assault rifle-style weapon fired shots through the ceiling of the two-story unit, which hit both victims on the second floor. Ward said officers are still investigating whether the gun was fired by accident or on purpose, but said police detained the man they believe fired the shots. Police said that man is being questioned, but has not been placed under arrest.
The names of both the shooter and victims have not been released. Ward said police do not know what relationship the victims and shooter had with one another. They believe the woman lived in the apartment, but said the girl was not from Grants Pass. Ward said several people were inside the apartment at the time of the incident, and said police are in the process of interviewing witnesses.
