MEDFORD, Ore. — Sunday evening police officers say a passerby saw someone walking near an irrigation canal near Gore Avenue and Lynn Street and called to report it.
Police say the responding officer found a cane and walked along the water to find the body floating near a drain where the canal leads underground.
Investigators say no foul play is suspected. Officers say the canal’s embankment was slippery from rain.
Police don’t know the person’s mental state during the time of the incident. Officers can’t release the victim’s name, but say he’s an older male.
“I don’t want to say that he’s a transient, but it is somebody we’ve had contact with. He probably does camp in the area. Whether his camp is back, there I don’t know,” said Corporal Trevor Arnold of Medford Police.
The canal is located behind the Sierra Pine Lumber Mill.
