MEDFORD, Ore. — Several police agencies are teaming up for the first time across three different states this holiday weekend. Troopers in Washington, Oregon and California are calling it the “I-5 Challenge”.
They will be looking out for speeders and distracted drivers like those talking on the phone or texting and driving. Troopers say their goal is to have zero fatalities this Thanksgiving holiday.
“All of these violations are contributors to fatal traffic crashes. In 2012, we had one fatal traffic crash over the Thanksgiving holiday, which doesn’t seem like a lot but still, one is too many,” said OSP Sgt. Dave Beck.
In Oregon, Wednesday is considered an “All Patrol Day”. Troopers, regardless of division, will be working traffic. The I-5 Challenge will end Sunday.
