NORTH SHORE, Hi. -- At Oahu's North Shore, the biggest swell of the season kicked off the first major surf contest, and it drew big crowds.

Ten to 15 foot waves pounded Oahu's North Shore Friday. The sets were inconsistent, but surfers say they were powerful, strong enough to snap a board. At Pipeline the beach was full of spectators, photographers, and plenty of surfers were out enjoying the big waves. There was an injury however, a bodyboarder was struck by a surf board and sustained head and back injuries. He was treated on the beach by lifeguards and paramedics.

"You know it's big surf. It's the biggest northwest swell that we've had this season and we're just urging people to use common sense and caution. If they have any questions, go to lifeguards," says Lieutenant John Hoogsteden.

At Waimea Bay the sudden sets sent sight see-ers scrambling from the shore break. And at Haleiwa, the Triple Crown of Surfing kicked off with the Reef Pro Meet. Vendors and merchants were thrilled by the large crowds and big business.
